Leaving the UAE? How to sell everything before you move

30 September 2026 · 7 min read · Khaznati Team

Leaving the UAE means turning a whole flat back into a couple of suitcases, usually in a few weeks and while you're also cancelling a visa, handing back keys and saying goodbye to people. Shipping furniture abroad rarely makes sense once you add up the container cost, so most of it gets sold. The question is how to sell it without either giving everything away in the last week or still chasing a buyer the morning of your flight.

This is the plan we'd follow, based on how things actually sell in the UAE: what to list first, where each kind of item sells best, and the bank-account timing that catches people out.

The eight-week timeline

The single biggest mistake is starting too late. Buyers can smell a deadline, and the week before a move is when a AED 3,000 sofa goes for AED 400. Work backwards from your flight date.

WhenWhat to do
8 weeks outWalk through every room and sort into keep, ship, sell, donate. Photograph everything you're selling while the flat is still tidy.
6 to 8 weeksList the big, slow items: furniture, appliances, a car. These take longest to sell and are worth the most.
4 to 6 weeksList everything you won't need again: spare electronics, books, decor, kids' outgrown things, clothes you're not packing.
2 to 4 weeksDrop prices on anything still unsold by 10 to 20%. Arrange collection dates for sold furniture close to move-out.
Last 2 weeksSell the things you use until the end (bed, fridge, TV) with a fixed collection date. Donate or give away what's left.
After you flyKeep your UAE bank account open until the last payouts, salary and deposits arrive.

Where each kind of item sells best

No single place is best for everything. Match the item to the channel and you'll get better prices with less effort. (We compared every option in detail in where to sell second-hand in the UAE.)

Big furniture, appliances and cars

Sofas, wardrobes, beds, dining sets, washing machines and fridges are too big for a standard courier parcel, so they sell best to local buyers who come and collect. Dubizzle and your building or community groups on Facebook and WhatsApp are the right places. Always state a collection date in the listing (“available to collect from 20 November”) so you can keep using the item until you move out.

If you run out of time, used-furniture dealers will clear a flat in one visit. Expect a fraction of what private buyers pay. Treat it as the fallback for the last week, not the plan.

Electronics, clothes, books and small homeware

Everything that fits in a box is where you save the most time by not doing meet-ups. On Khaznati you list from your phone, and when something sells a courier collects it from your door, so you're not waiting in for strangers during your busiest weeks. Sellers pay zero commission, so the price you list is what you keep (buyers pay a protection fee at checkout).

Phones and laptops deserve a proper wipe before they go. Our guide to selling an iPhone in the UAE covers the steps.

Kids' things

Strollers, car seats, cots, toys and outgrown clothes sell well because there's always a new wave of young families arriving. Bundle small items (“girls' 3 to 4 years, 15 pieces”) rather than listing each one; bundles sell faster and save you hours.

Things nobody will buy

Opened toiletries, worn-out bedding, cheap flat-pack furniture that won't survive being moved, and old kitchen basics. Offer them free to your building group, hand them to a charity collection, or leave them for the next tenant if your landlord agrees. Don't let them eat up time you should spend selling the valuable things.

How to price when you're on a deadline

Don't close your bank account too early

This is the one that catches people. Sales made in your last weeks still need to be paid, and most UAE marketplaces pay out to a UAE bank account. On Khaznati, after something sells you schedule a courier pickup within a few days. Once the item is delivered, the buyer has 48 hours to confirm it arrived as described, and then your payout is released.

Rule of thumb
Stop listing on any platform that pays you later about two weeks before your flight, and close your UAE bank account last, after the final payouts, salary, gratuity and deposit refunds have arrived.

Quick checklist

Frequently asked questions

How early should I start selling before leaving the UAE?

Start six to eight weeks before your flight. That gives furniture time to find a buyer at a fair price, and it leaves the last two weeks for the things you need until the end, plus a buffer for payouts to reach your bank account before you close it.

What is the fastest way to sell furniture before leaving Dubai?

Price it realistically, list it on the big classifieds sites with a clear collection date, and post in your building's community group. For a full house, a moving-out sale on a single weekend clears a lot at once. Used-furniture dealers will buy everything in one visit, but they pay the lowest prices.

Should I close my UAE bank account before or after selling my things?

After. Keep the account open until every sale has been paid out, and until your final salary, gratuity and deposit refunds have landed. Close it as one of the last things you do.

Can I sell things on Khaznati if I'm leaving the UAE soon?

Yes, as long as you plan around the timeline. After a sale you schedule a courier pickup within a few days, and your payout is released once the buyer confirms delivery or 48 hours after delivery. Stop listing about two weeks before you fly so the last payouts reach your UAE bank account in time.

Sell it without leaving home

List in minutes. A courier collects from your door and you pay zero commission.
